How do I get started as a model or actor?
To hire a model/actor, clients contact the agency to review available talent for their project. To show that you are professional and worth hiring as a paid model or actor, you must have current professional head shots and body shots. You should have a digital version and a hard copy version of your portfolio book. A photo portfolio book is a collection of photos which show your versatility and quality as a model. It is recommended that you have printed head shots, composite cards and/or a portfolio books so you have something to present and/or leave with clients at auditions, go-sees, networking events and so on.
Digital/online portfolios allow clients to preview the models and actors they wish to hire and see up-to-date photos, resume and stats such as clothing sizes, age range, etc.
The agency’s website offers a search option for current and potential clients. Clients can filter talent based on the specifications for their project and the talent’s profile can immediately be viewed.
What will I need to be marketed as a model or actor by the agency?
Most of the agency’s talent work both modeling and acting jobs (this may be speaking or non-speaking video work).
For modeling, you will need:
- Photos in a portfolio book that show a variety of looks
- A composite card, usually a 6″ x 8” card with photos front & back, your name and stats
For acting and on-camera video work, you will need:
- An 8 x 10 commercial head shot
- Resume
- Acting Reel
In both cases an online presence is very beneficial and clients increasingly rely on finding models and actors using online portfolios.
Do I have to take modeling or acting classes?
Look Models & Actors Agency does not require that you take modeling or acting workshops through this agency. However, it is strongly advised that you work with photographers to build your portfolio book as well as acting coaches to gain on-camera experience and develop your skills. This will add to your marketability as an actor or model and increase the opportunities that you have to book paid work.
What is the difference between a talent agency and a casting agency?
Talent agencies develop talent and present them as options to casting directors or casting agencies who are seeking submissions for their projects. Casting directors and casting agencies select who they feel is the best fit for their project. Talent agencies are rarely involved directly with making casting decisions.
What is the difference between a model and actor agency and a casting agency?
Model and actor agencies work with casting directors and do not compete against each other. Casting agencies reach out to talent agencies like LOOK for submissions for projects.
What "type" of models and actors do you represent?
The agency has models and actors of all types and all ethnicities: men, women, fashion, fitness, plus size, character types, commercial/lifestyle, children, teens, adults. And pets, too! You do not have to look like a runway model to have success in this industry.
Is everyone accepted into the Look Models & Actors Agency?
No. If the agency feels that you could possibly find work as a paid professional model or actor, you will be represented and marketed to potential clients. Everyone is evaluated individually.
How old do I have to be to start modeling and acting?
Look Models represents talent from newborn to senior citizens.
How much money can I make as a model or actor?
Rates for talent vary from job to job and are based on various factors including experience and the usage of the images. A job may pay hourly or it may pay by the day. Full details of the job are sent to you before the assignment.
Do you charge any fees?
There are no fees for representation. The agency takes a 20% commission on any job that is booked through the agency. This is standard for non-union work. All agency services such as photoshoots, acting or modeling workshops are recommended, but optional.
Where do modeling and acting jobs take place?
The majority of this agency’s work is booked in Eastern Pennsylvania. There are jobs booked occasionally in New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C., or Virginia.
What kind of jobs can I expect from a full service modeling and acting agency like LOOK?
A full service booking agency hires talent for a variety of jobs such as print, runway, TV, film, commercial, industrial and promotional work (live events).
What is a Go-See?
A Go-See is an appointment to Go See a client that might be interested in hiring you. A Go-See is not always for a specific job, sometimes it’s an opportunity for a client to see many new models and/or actors at once. Think of a Go-See as a relationship builder – they may not have a specific job for you at the moment-but if you make a good impression, they may later.
Am I guaranteed modeling and acting work?
No. The agency presents recommendations to the client and they select the model or actor that best fits the job. The agency is not part of the decision-making process. It is important to remember that the process of booking paid jobs through this agency or any other agency can take some time, especially for newer talent. New talent will often book lower paying jobs initially. However, as you gain more experience and build a stronger resume, you will be considered for higher paying opportunities.
When are modeling and acting jobs held?
Modeling and acting jobs are almost always held during the week-Monday through Friday, anytime between the hours of 7am and 6pm. It is important that you have some flexibility in your schedule.
School-aged children may need to request permission from their school district in regards to missing time for a booking. This will usually be anywhere from a half day up to 2 days.
Can I also be represented by other agencies?
Yes. Look Models and Actors Agency is a non-exclusive agency, which means you are free to pursue opportunities through other agencies or on your own.
How much notice do I get for bookings/auditions?
This can be a very fast-paced business. In regional markets like the Lehigh Valley, you will usually know at least 5 days in advance. In larger markets such as New York or Philadelphia, sometimes only a day or two is given. Each project is different.
Is it okay to bring people with me to auditions or to jobs I book?
If you are under 18, it is required that you are accompanied by a parent or guardian. A child should be accompanied by one adult. It is not considered professional to bring additional family or friends along to a job.
How often should I update my professional photos?
You must always arrive to a job looking like your submitted images. Anytime you change your look noticeably (lose weight, color your hair, etc.) you must update your images. If you wear your hair both curly and straight, you should have photos representing both looks. If your look has not changed drastically, it is recommended that you update your professional photos every 1-2 years. For younger children who change quickly, photos will need to be updated more frequently.
